It made me want to read Nostromo by Conrad. One example is Miguel. For THIS reader, however, the writing style was difficult to muddle through.

He eventually leaves his daughter, now 17, and goes to Europe to tell the story of the revolution. Refresh and try again. He then realizes that Joseph Conrad begins to publish Nostromo recounting the story he once related to him in a fateful meeting, and that he is marginalized and virtually erased from that history.

Mar 02, Toby rated it it was amazing. Then he goes on to describe the first glimpse we see of Conrad and how his actions lead to his meeting with Jose. I would not recommend the audiobook if you are reading this for its historical content. If you want to understand the history of Colombia and the birth of Panama, this book is perhaps not the place to start. Many years before, he confessed to Conrad his life’s every delicious detail-from his country’s heroic revolutions to his darkest solitary moments.

A sumptuous beautiful novel, impeccably translated.

All in all major respect for this book. This particular one is a bit convoluted as it is non- linear and at some place there are just far too many references to historical figures generals in particular and events- a familiarity with Colombian history might help but for others like me, it is an education, secrdta a exasperating one at places. This novel is an intellectual treat that asks the reader to consider the ethics of writing, civil revolution, and the building secretaa the Panama Canal.

There is always Wiki I struggled to begin with and then really nistoria in to it. It felt like this is how someone who had lived through the events would feel.
