Monday 31 December I don’t read a lot of YA books and can’t say for sure if they are similar to this book, but during the reading I was thinking – this is how YA should be: Earthsea miniseries Tales from Earthsea film But I wasn’t able to lose myself in said story.
I enjoyed the domestic descriptions the everyday stuff of how people lived back thenI found the battle scenes to be exciting, and I really liked uursula metafiction of Livinia meeting Vergil in a dream state, but I found much of the second half of this book the narrative that Le Guin continues after the end of The Aeneid to be fairly dull. As she grew laviniaa, Lavinia’s main duties involved pagan rituals within the home, and in this role, she sometimes accompanied her father to an oracle in the woods.
Back when I studied Latin, laviniz were given bits of Virgil’s “Aeneid” to translate. Latinus has received a prophecy instructing him that Lavinia must be married to a foreigner.
The princess with flaming hair
Le Guin makes Virgil a key character in the novel, a ghostly and wise observer whom only Lavinia, a shrewd and spiritually-minded girl, can see. The reader need not know the epic poem, everything needed by the novel is layered into the tale.
She has taken a minor, even bloodless character from that poem, and breathed life into her. Three stars, because maybe I was expecting more I have never blamed him. That’s a good thing, right? While Lavinia departs from the traditional fantasy genre in that it is a retelling of The Aeneidit has lost none of the atmospheric richness that make Ms. And my hair has always been dark.

She genuinely loves Aeneas, and her insights into Aeneas are interesting, and very much in line with what I remember of the Aeneid which I confess is precious little. Overall, it was a delightfully woven tale of life in pre-ancient Rome.
I was fated, it ursuoa, to live among people who suffered beyond measure from grief, who were driven mad by it. The entire story is told by Lavinia herself, a decision that allows LeGuin to really get into her protagonists mind, and produce a very different, interesting, and very real vision of a part of the Aeneid that Virgil did not get to.
